30 Donor Stories – St. Lawrence Shares Supper and Support

Once a month, on a Monday evening, The St. Lawrence Supper Club meets at a local restaurant to hear thought-provoking talks about our community, our city, or our world.  Each speaker is chosen to inspire the mind, raise awareness of issues that affect us all, and strengthen community relations and commitment. The Supper Club has become a symbol of the community connection in the St. Lawrence neighbourhood and beyond.  At each gathering, members learn and enjoy a meal together.  At the same time they also reach out in support of projects or agencies in the St. Lawrence Community.

This past year, the St. Lawrence Supper Club chose to donate their annual community gift to Street Health. “Our group meets monthly to enjoy presentations on current topics and provide the opportunity for members to socialize,” explains coordinator Nancy Miller.  “Thanks to the support of our club’s host – the Hot House Restaurant – these meetings also have a fundraising component so we are able to make a donation to a charity each year.”

Throughout our 30 year history many community groups, like the St. Lawrence Supper Club, have made donations which allow Street Health to continue providing a high level of support for those who need our services. “Street Health relies on these wonderful local supporters,” states Kapri Rabin, Executive Director. “Each donation is not only helping us to meet our clients’ needs, but is another voice of support for our advocacy efforts on the systemic issues that need to be addressed.” Research and advocacy have always been a part of Street Health’s mission, vison and values. It is this work that is helping to advance support on issues like safety, shelter capacity and the need for 24 hour drop-in centres, which impact our clients every day.”

“As downtown residents, many of our members already knew about and contribute to the work being done to provide healthcare and support to the homeless in Toronto,” notes Nancy. “We are pleased to contribute to Street Health’s programs and services…which make a real difference in the lives of individuals.”
