30 Donor Stories – Community Partners Provide Compassion and Supplies

2016 marks the 30th anniversary of Street Health’s work in the community. This work has been possible in part thanks to longtime relationships with supporters and donors who help ensure Street Health has the resources to meet our clients’ needs.

One such relationship is with the Tzu Chi Foundation Canada, Toronto Branch. The Toronto Tzu Chi Foundation grew out of the society founded in Taiwan in 1966. Now the non-profit organization has branches and supporters worldwide. Their mission focuses on charity, medicine, education and culture.

During the harsh, cold days of winter, the Tzu Chi Foundation rallies dozens of volunteers to hold a community lunch which usually serves more than 300 people. Our neighbor All Saint’s Church have regularly provided the space for this special day of warmth and caring. This annual event with Street Health is one of many ways that Tzu Chi volunteers support the local community. The volunteers prepare and serve a hot lunch in a friendly, community environment. They also provide a winter care package to each person, which includes a hat, gloves and a variety of personal care products to help clients deal with the winter conditions. “A heart filled with kindness, compassion, joy and unselfish giving inspires the ideals of Tzu Chi,” states Toronto Director Hui Fei Tsai “Globally, our volunteers are regularly out in various communities, caring for those in need. This could be providing disaster relief, or working with marginalized communities to promote the equality of all beings. Locally, we are working on a project to deepen our collaboration with community groups by providing the resources to offer herbal medicine consultations. We are excited to offer this knowledge and support as part of our efforts to promote health and wellbeing.”

Along with this annual community lunch, Tzu Chi provides Street Health with one month’s worth of nursing supplies each winter and summer. This donation extends their care to where and when it is needed most. “The Tzu Chi Foundation is a wonderful community partner who have demonstrated support for Street Health for many years,” recognizes Allana Sullivan, Registered Nurse. “With the supplies they donate we know we will have what we need to provide clients with the best care possible.”
